Nintendo Wii: Over 30 Million Served

Nintendo reached a major milestone this month with sales of its Wii console in North America. The company's internal sales numbers show that the Wii system has now sold 30 million units in the United States alone. This significant milestone was reached in just 45 months, making Wii the fastest-selling console in the history of the industry, reaching this milestone 15 months faster than the next best-selling console. The console currently retails for \$199 USD, considerably cheaper than competing machines from Sony and Microsoft.\n\nThe Wii launched in November 2006 and ushered in a new era of video games. The built-in motion controls of the iconic Wiimote controller drew new players to the world of video games. Kids started playing with their parents and grandparents, people got up off the couch to dance around like fools, and if Nintendo marketing materials are to be believed, even senior citizens got in on the action.\n\n\"More than any other video game system in history, Wii has expanded the world of video games to new audiences,\" said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. \"This milestone is another reminder that people want fun games they can play with others - all at a value-minded price.\"\n\n\n\n\n\nSome of the aforementioned marketing materials.\n\n\nThe 30 million milestone is a good time to look back at all the fun Wii games and experiences that have made the console special. One of the unique features of the Wii platform is that many games follow an evergreen sales trend that keep them selling over long periods of time. Another interesting feature of its success is that the Wii has achieved these impressive sales numbers without much help from third-party games (although not for lack of trying by dogged publishers). Nintendo core franchises like Mario and Metroid are what have sold Wii machines.\n\nAccording to the NPD Group, the top 10 best-selling Nintendo-published Wii games in the United States (through the end of June) are:\n\n1.
