New Super Mario Brothers Wii Setting Sales Records

Did you know that all ten of the best-selling console games of all time have been for Nintendo platforms? It's true, and no matter how popular games like Halo or Grand Theft Auto may be in North America, Nintendo's family-friendly offerings have always sold in much higher numbers globally. Now the company has another record to be proud of. This Year's New Super Mario Brothers Wii is now the second-highest seller of all time in Japan, second only to the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES/Famicom. The new game, which introduces cooperative play for the first time, has sold an incredible 3.9 million copies in that country alone since it launched. It may never quite reach the popularity of the original, but that is one record we wouldn't mind keeping intact. For comparison, here is the full list of top selling console games in japan:

1. [FC/NES] Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo) - 6.81m
2. [WII] New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo) - 3,894,356 (Through July 4, 2010)
