Why no Wii Games of the Year for 2008?

Video Game publications and award shows are busy making lists and checking them twice, handing out accolades for the best games to grace their respective systems from the previous 12 months. On the Internet we’ve had heated debates about which games ultimately deserve to be crowned “game of the year”. There is much talk about the relative merits of Fable II, Fallout 3, and GTA IV. Even Sony’s quirky LittleBigPlanet has picked up some metal this year at award shows. What is completely missing from everyone’s lips as we fight over the game of 2008, however, is the Wii.
At the VGA awards on Sunday, Grand Theft Auto ultimately took the honor. Last year, the Wii was similarly snubbed, with Super Mario Galaxy nominated, but finally losing out to Bioshock. This year the only highlight was EA’s Boom Blox, which took Wii game of the year, indicating either complete cluelessness on the part of judges or the lack of any meaningful competition. At least World of Goo picked up “Best independent game”.

Was Boom Blox the best Wii game of the year 2008?

The poor performance of the Wii at awards season is perplexing. In November the console sold an estimated 2 million hardware units in North America alone, setting all sorts of records and further cementing the dominance of Nintendo as the market share leader in this current hardware generation. How is it that the console with the most units sold by a landslide doesn't even have a single release in the running for the coveted “Game of the Year” category?
The simple answer is that Nintendo dropped the ball, big time. At least from the perspective of the so-called “core” gamer, Nintendo’s first party offerings this past year have been disappointing. The company drew wide criticism for its desultory showing at E3 this year, where the most interesting things they had to show were a new version of Wii Sports and the underwhelming Wii Music. Where were the Zeldas, Marios, Yoshis and Kirbys that the Japanese publisher is known for? Not even on the horizon for 2009. It seems that Nintendo is so busy printing money with their incredible new console, they forgot to make any actual games for it.

They made games for it, just none that core gamers would give awards to. I've loved several games I bought this year, but I recognize they are not the "gamer" games that win these things. That's ok, we don't need a third console putting out the exact same type of games. It would be nice to have some of the games on the Wii that would benefit from the controller, (like RE5) but what do you do? The thing is successful and I think third party support will only increase. Hopefully the next 18 months will see some great things from third parties like Madworld, The Conduit and that odd little 2D game from the makers of Odin Sphere among others.

Though I can uderstand where you are coming from about E3, I have the feeling that E3 just is not what it used to be in the eyes of Nintendo or any other gaming company for that matter. I think this is apparent because we saw big news releases at other shows for example the news of Punch Out!
I have been sitting by for a while now and watching one site and magazine after another bash every game Nintendo puts out. Even the ones they like do not get any higher than above average on any scale they use. Now, I am not normally a conspiracy theorist, but I just do not think these so called experts want this system to succeed. They feel that Nintendo has let in too many "other people" to play their games. they feel that they ignore the core gamer.
I think it is the same sentiment that many comic book fans have. They sit back and say why are all of the top movies comic book movies but the industry does not grow. Then, they are ticked that something in the movie was not cannon.
I think this is what you are seeing with these awards people. It is a form of protest.

This question is so easy to answer. The Wii is a toy. It isn't a serious console. It has no good games. It had a category for best Wii game so a game had to win that one.
I want to know who this genius is who hypnotized all these idiots into buying a Wii. They're buying a lot of consoles. Too bad they have no games.

Wii Music got my vote for Game of the Year. I have never had so much fun dumping so many hours into a game before. Even just playing random tunes in the menu screens can keep me busy for longer than you'd think.
I think that people aren't realizing that the actual core is different these days - what people are calling "hard core" has become mainstream.
It looks like the new "hardcore gamer" is definitely the Wii gamer; the one that loves to play games that are games because it's fun to play games

I call em Jackasses bought by Sony and MS
Wii clearly brought many games this year, and pretty good ones, but nintendo didn't gave much of their money to the judges.
The thing is, many are 360 and ps3 fanboys hurt because their console is not the one leading the market and put their shield on the excuse that the Wii is underpowered, same goes for developers.
They gave the GOTY award to a game that had to be patched several times? how blind are those idiots???? Didn't they saw Gears of War 2??? That one was amazing and didn't needed any kind of patch!!!!
If you are asking what games brought the Wii, 'll give you a list
SSB Brawl.- Only flaw its online play, which i hadn't found to be that bad, i had played quite well always
Mario Kart Wii.- Come on!!! How can you consider games like Need For Speed, MotorStorm, Pure, Grid and Burnout core games and Mario Kart not. They are racing games!!! And more else, Mario Kart Wii brought a whole new level of gaming style, like many of us like to play racing games with a car wheel!!! and not arrows. Besides, it has use of weapons, which gives the game more challenges, instead of only pressing 1 buttons to gas and another to break. Those who says the wiiwheel sucks is just an excsue for their lack of skills.
No More Heroes.- People wanted blood on Wii games, Grasshooper and Suda51 delivered. It has a pretty good clicheed script, awesome music, and man, so many ways to kill foes that you never got to choose yer favorite. And the character, is not what you expect from a protagonist of a game!!!
BoomBlox.- Its an explosive Jenga!!!
Its a shame, really, how can judges only focus on graphics and not in innovations and gameplay. I had read many reviews on GTAIV and I can't find what so amusing about it besides the music selection. I can only see it as a GTA3 with more polygons.
I mean, Mirror's edge, nice graphics, physics, music, sound, and more overall, is a new way to play FPS!!!! Hell, its more of a Action-Adventure-Platformer-FPS!!!
Its short, but still its a pretty good game and still reviewers and judges didn't looked at it!!!
Innovation people, its the key of gaming, making games fun!!! Not suit graphics, those can be delivered by anyone.
Really, if you really all you want is eye candy, head over to PCgaming instead and leave consoles
