Nintendo Wii Outsells All Other Consoles in US

After an overwhelmingly positive public reception, nobody doubted that the Wii would be a stong seller for Nintendo. Now it is clear that the diminutive white box really does "print money" -- for Nintendo shareholders, at least. A recent NPD report states that since its launch in June 2006, the Wii has sold nearly 11 million units in the United States, more than any other home console (The DS also kicked butt, raking in 20.8 million sales since its launch). This past June alone, the Nintendo Wii sold a whopping 660,000 units in North America, bolstered in part by strong releases like Wii fit and Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Clearly, demand for the family-friendly console continues to be stong, even during the summer season when games purchases are typically at their lowest point.
Despite the supposedly weak showing by Nintendo at E3 this year, it is clear that the company's strategy of targeting non-traditional gamers is working. Perhaps the market analysts and executives at Sony and Microsoft should pay greater heed to the unexpected success of the massively popular Wii.
