Nintendo of America 2009 DS Release Schedule

Nintendo of America has officially issued its upcoming release schedule for the first quarter of 2009. There are still no major first-party surprises on the horizon, but we do have a few treats to look forward to heading into the new year.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of shovelware on the list, but there are also a few highlights. Among the standout titles is Pokémon Platinum version, a new entry in the beloved Pokémon series, slated for a March 22 launch across North America. Other big releases include Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

According to the company, Pokémon Platinum features a new story and more varieties of Pokemon to collect. The game features never-before-seen forms of powerful Pokémon – including the legendary Giratina’s Origin Forme – and the Distortion World, a mysterious new world that suddenly appears in the Sinnoh region. In addition, with Pokémon Platinum up to 20 players can interact with other Pokémon fans from around the world in the new Wi-Fi Plaza, featuring mini-games and activities. Pokémon Platinum already has broken previous Nintendo DS sales records in Japan, selling more than 1 million copies in its first two days of release.

Of course there are also a plethora of new training games. Personal Trainer: Math builds on the new Personal Trainer series. The game introduces 40 fast-paced exercises to give players a fun way to improve their arithmetic skills.

RPG fans also have something to look forward to. The Fire Emblem franchise will get a DS port with the arrival of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, a revamped and re-imagined version of the NES classic, featuring touch-screen controls. Players with a broadband Internet connection can enjoy worldwide battles over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
