Nintendo DSi Arrives April 5th

Breaking news... this just in. The Nintendo DSi has just received a release date. According to Nintendo's press page, the DSi will be available on American shelves on April 5, 2009. The colors available at launch will be Blue and Black. The Japanese version has been available since November 2008. Within the first two days 170,779 units were sold. Nintendo reported that 3.04 million DS units were sold in 2008.
The DSi, unlike the past two DS iterations, will unfortunately drop support for the Game Boy Advance. The GBA slot will be replaced by a SD memory card slot. Other features include slightly larger screens, music playback, audio and picture editing software, two cameras, and a new user interface.
First off, let's examine the Nintendo DSi Sound Application. The software acts as an interactive voice recorder and music player that "allows users to play with their music while they listen to it." Audio filters and manipulation tools give users control of the pitch, speed, and tempo of recorded sounds and music. Users can also alter the sound of their own recorded voices.
Secondly, but most notably, is the addition of two built-in 0.3 megapixel cameras where "one camera is on the external body, and the second one points at the user when the device is flipped open." The cameras will offer innovative ways for players to interact with the game and will open up fresh game play ideas.
With the DSi supporting SD memory cards, there is finally space to download games, which are available through the DSiWare application store. Users can connect through Wi-Fi to access the new app store.
The DSi also supports WPA security now, which for the first time makes it compatible with newer and more secure wireless home networks. Previous generations supported WEP, an obsolete type of wireless security protection known to be vulnerable to hackers. Some older games will still require users to connect via WEP to play online.
The DSi will retail for $169.99. Apologies go out to Dream Kitty.
