Ignition Entertainment Bringing Blue Dragon To US, Europe

American video game publisher Ignition Entertainment has acquired the rights to the highly-anticipated Blue Dragon Plus for the Nintendo DS. The original Blue Dragon was an early attempt to re-create a retro console RPG feel on the Xbox 360. While the game featured some very big names in Japanese video game production (Final Fantasy designer Hironobu Sakaguchi was on staff) it failed to gain more than a cult following in either Japan or the United States. Nevertheless, designers felt that the franchise deserved another chance, and authorized a handheld Nintendo DS version that uses some of the same game mechanics from the original console adventure.

The original story of Blue Dragon centered on a young boy named Shu and several of his friends who possessed the unique ability to literally summon giant dragons out of thin air. In Blue Dragon Plus, one year has passed since Shu and his companions defeated the tyrannical remnant of the Ancients, Nene. It turns out that the previous battle split the world in two, and unleashed a new three-headed dragon called the Shadow of a Balaur. The appearance of the sinister Shadow is just the beginning of the new turmoil and devastation to come.

Ignition plans to release the DS game in Europe and the United States simultneously in March of 2009.
