Sonic Chaos Now on Virtual Console

What a treat for Sonic fans. One of the most beloved original 8-bit Sonic games has made its way to the Virtual Console this week. Fans in the United States can now grab Sonic Chaos for the ever-so-worthwhile price of 500 Wii points.

Sonic Chaos, (known as Sonic & Tails in Japan) for the Sega Master System allowed players to take on the role of Sonic's pal Tails for the first time. Little did fans know back then, but this would mark the beginning of a whole plethora of annoying sidekicks in subsequent Sonic titles. When the game was released, however, the addition of a second playable character was a bretty major innovation. In this game, Dr. Eggman (a.k.a. Dr. Robotnik) has stolen the Red Chaos Emerald, which everyone knows is required to create nuclear weapons. This has thrown the remaining Chaos Emeralds off balance, causing them to transport to a parallel universe. As a result, Sonic's home, South Island, is sinking into the ocean. The game has you speeding through various levels in your crusade for the six Chaos Emeralds in order to restore order in your chaotic world.

New in this title was the ability to perform Strike Dashes and Super-Peel Outs as Sonic, or Spin Dashes and Flight as Tails.

Fun fact: Sonic Chaos won the coveted "Game of the Year" award in 1993 from Electonic Gaming Monthly.
