Nintendo 3DS is Undisputed Star of E3

Our new writer Coty Biggs takes a look at the Nintendo 3DS and explains why it has taken E3 by storm.

If you're wondering what that sound was, it's Nintendo's gloves hitting the floor. With a plethora of silvery gadgets revealed at E3, its clear that they're about to bring more pain than a pissed-off Bowser with throbbing hemorrhoids. Nothing seems to spark as much interest as the Nintendo 3DS simply because of the proposed capability of displaying 3D without equipping a pair of cumbersome chick repelling goggles. This step is so completely different from the focus of other companies' that one might wonder if they held off announcing their own hardware due to complete shock and awe.

Just as their fierce competitors thought they nailed 'em right in the kisser with the Kinect and Move peripherals, Nintendo plunged tactfully into their dangling satchel of magical goodness and whipped out a hard plastic piece of 3D that you could hold in your hands. Since everything you've ever seen in 3D is brought to you by way of distorted images and dorky headgear, its generally accepted that initial reactions would be somewhat skeptical.

Energetic rants about Nintendo's 3D method of madness prior to E3 generally ran parallel to the reaction that greeted the original DS hardware and its operation. The visuals are likely achieved using two screens, one behind the other, with the 'hidden' screen displaying an off-set image thus giving the illusion of 3D without having to don those ever-so-conspicuous nerd windows.

The biggest and most foreboding issue with 3D devices is manufacturing a device capable of giving the user a comfortable viewing angle along with preserving the integrity of the image. After all, you cant adequately admire the rotund lady behinds in Dead or Alive without some wiggle room, and the requisite right angle needed to make such features pop may prove too rigid in reality. Look on the bright side though, at least delinquent scholars can peck away their boredom in Anatomy 101 with their teacher being none-the-wiser to their stealthy Metal Gear exploits.

Regardless of Sony's plans for 3D on the PS3 and Microsoft's revamped 360, it's clear that Nintendo made a step in the right direction. No matter how amazing a full fledged platform in 3D may be, the market must be ready to accept these new additions. Why not do practical market research by releasing a feasible and affordable bit of hardware that's pioneering as well as expendable? In this economy its tough to keep your head above the water, therefore there is little room for balls to the wall platform gambles. Nintendo is in the right place to do damage with their new addition to the family. Be ready to serve up ample Donkey Kong beat downs in the first quarter of next year.
